What Are Your Golf Clubs Worth?
This is a quick post, but I wanted to share with you a new golf website I found. I'm not exactly sure how long they've been around, but it's definitely worth a look.
It's called GolfBlueBook.com and as you can probably guess they provide a blue book value for golf clubs. They give you the average trade-in value and the average auction value (golfexchange.com).
The values are broken down into 5 categories (Fair, Good, Very Good, Excellent, Average) so you can determine what your clubs are worth based on the condition.
I think this is a great idea and a good place to go if you're in the market for some clubs. You can use the prices as a guide when looking for clubs to make sure you're getting the best deal or not getting ripped off.
Have you seen this golf site before?

Want 17 More Yards Out Of Your Driver?
How would you like to hit your driver 17-yards longer? If I told you that you could gain 10 to 20 more yards on your drives by changing the golf ball your using or by increasing the loft on your driver would you be interested?
In a previous posts I've discussed things like getting properly fitted for clubs, launch conditions, etc... Well I'm here to say it again. I recently read an aritcle in Golf Digest that discussed the importance of launch angle, spin rate, and angle of descent.
The article stated that they test 80 club champions and they were able to increase their tee shot distances by an average of 17-yards just be tweaking the equipment they used. When I say tweaking I mean changing the ball and loft of their driver.
You need to remember that these guys are club champions and for them to gain 17-yards is a lot. Can you imagine what the average golfer could gain on their drives by doing this? We're probably talking about an additional 20 or 30 yards on their drives.
As a golfer we all want to hit the golf ball farther, so with a few small changes in your golf equipment you could be the longer hitter in your group and your buddies will want to know your secret.
The golf article is at Golf Digest if your interested.

Is The Titleist 905R Driver Worth The Money?
I was at Golfsmith golf shop over the weekend getting my son fitted for some clubs when I saw a Titleist 905R driver with a Speeder stiff shaft. It was a demo club and I wanted to hit a few golf balls with it because I had heard a lot of good things about it.
After my son was finished with his club fitting, I asked the Golfsmith employee helping my son if I could hit few golf balls with it. Golfsmith has a pretty nice launch monitor set up that provides all kinds of feedback like launch angle, swing speed, spin rate, etc...
I stepped up to the launch monitor and made a few practice swings. The club felt nice and was very attractive looking when setting up to the ball.
On my first ball I was definitely stiff and only got about a 260-yard carry with 105 mph swing speed. The golf ball came of the face nice and it felt very solid. I hit a few more and with each swing I was getting warmed up. On my last swing I made my best swing and had a 321-yard carry with a swing speed of 116 mph.
I was very impressed by the Titleist 905R and might be interested in trying one out. The only complaint I had with the club was the stiff Speeder shaft... it just wasn't stiff enough because all of my shots had a fade, which meant the club was getting stuck and open at impact.
I currently play with the Taylormade TP r7 Quad with a XS Speeder shaft, which I hit very well and really don't want to part with it.
So "Is The Titleist 905R Worth The Money?"... absolutely. It is very popular on the PGA tour and it's currently the most popular club on eBay.

New Golf Ball Flies 50 Yards Farther
How many times have you heard or read a claim about a new golf ball adding 10, 20, or more yards to your drive? I wouldn't be surprised if pretty soon you see a golf ball manufacturer claim that their golf ball will travel 50 yards further than any other golf ball.
Has technology played too much of a role in the game of golf? The materials they use today to create drivers, irons, shoes, golf balls, etc... has become a science. The golf manufacturers are coming out with very sophisticated materials to create clubs, balls, etc... The golf manufacturing industry has taken on a life of it's own by using space age metals and technology to create an edge on their competitors.
There has been a lot of discussion among some of big golf names about the distance the golf ball flies today. Gary Player has been advocating a change as well as Butch Harmon. Harmon has been quoted as saying "I think the ball is the big thing and the R&A and the USGA have got to step up to the plate and make a decision on what they're going to do with it."
I personally like crushing the ball 280 to 300 yards and I like seeing the pro's hitting it 300 to 340 yards. I also like seeing the low scores the golf pros are making these days, and watching them reach the majority of the par 5's in two with a putt for eagle. It makes the game of golf more exciting to see all the birdies being made.
What do you think? Should the USGA put additional limits on how far a golf ball can travel?

My Double Eagle (Or Albatross)
Have you every had a double eagle while playing golf? Have you ever witnessed a double eagle?
About 5 years ago I was playing in a 2-man scramble tournament with a buddy of mine at Los Coyotes Country Club in Buena Park, CA. We came up to a short par 4 of about 330-yards with an elevated tee. I let my partner hit first to see if I should give it a go and sure enough he hit it in the middle of the fairway.
The wind was playing slightly from right to left and I play a natural draw so I had start the ball about 10-yards right of the green. I took back the club nice and slow and put a perfect swing on the ball. It took off exactly where I was aiming and with the wind and slight draw I had on the ball it started taking shape to be right on target. It seemed like the ball hung up in the air forever. As it was getting closer to the green I could tell it was going to be close... really close.
It landed and practically stuck right in the green and started rolling towards the hole. I felt like my heart was going to pound out my chest. The ball reached the hole and then it lipped out a few inches away. I couldn't believe it lipped out... I thought I had pulled off the impossible. I had mixed emotions about the shot because on one hand I was millimeters from pulling off the ultimate shot in golf and on the other hand I had a tap in eagle putt.
We didn't win the tournament that day, but that one shot I still vividly remember as if it happened yesterday... and the only thing I remember from that day.
I know the post says "My Double Eagle", but this is as close to one that I've come so I consider it "My Double Eagle".
Do you have any double eagle or almost double eagle stories to share?

In Search Of Golf Equipment
Getting the right golf equipment to play the game of golf can be daunting for someone new to the game because of all the choices. You just need to be pointed in the right direction with a few tips and it's really pretty easy.
Here are some tips to get your started on buying golf gear:
1. The first thing you must do is determine your budget. How much are you willing to spend on a complete set of golf clubs. When I mean a complete set of golf clubs I'm referring to the irons, woods, putter, and bag. It's important to set a limit on what you want to spend because a complete set can cost from $150 to over $2000.
2. The next thing you need to determine is how often you'll be playing golf. If you're just starting out to see if you like golf then you'll probably want to get the least expensive set that does the job with no emphasis on brand names. A lot of the sports shops carry complete golf sets and they often have great sales on them. I know Costco even carries a nice set by Jack Nicklaus that's around $200. This is a great price for a complete set and it can definitely be used for many years.
3. If $200 to $300 is still out of your range then I would look into used or second hand golf sets. Pretty much all golf shops carry second hand golf equipment and you can get some really good deals on them. The majority of the time you're not going to find a used complete golf set so you'll have to purchase the irons, woods, putter, and bag separately. Later on if you decide you want to get more serious in golf then you can usually trade your existing clubs in and use the money to purchase a brand new set.
4. Now when it comes to determining one brand from the other it's really not something a beginner should worry about. Don't be pressured by a salesman if he's trying to push a brand name set on you. When you're just starting out it really doesn't matter what the brand is. If you're interested in brand name sets then the salesman should be able to provide you with information describing the difference between the brands.
5. I suggest looking through the Saturday or Sunday newspaper for sporting good ads and look for complete golf sets. Golf specialty stores are also a good place to get pricing on sets. I'd also search the Internet because there are hundreds of golf sites offering complete golf sets. EBay is an excellent place to get golf equipment, which includes complete golf sets. I've purchased and sold a lot of golf equipment through eBay and I've been very pleased with the quality. Craigslist.org is also another place you can look for used clubs that are local to you.
6. As a last suggestion I'd ask some of your friends if they have any old sets they'd be willing to sell you, which often time they'll give you an extremely good deal. If they don't have any then they may have a friend who does so there's no harm in asking.
Good luck on your search and if you need any additional help place a comment for this post.

RE/MAX Long Drive In Shorts & Flip-flops
Yes the title of this post is correct. About 6 years ago I was on vacation at the Omni Tucson International Resort in Tucson, Arizona. It was in August and disgustingly hot, but we spent most of the time in the pool.
One of the nice amenities was a complimentary golf range that just happened to be steps from our suite. I was with my son and every afternoon around 3 or 4pm we would go out and hit a bucket or two. This particular day we had just left the pool and on my way back to the suite I saw a RE/MAX tent over by the clubhouse.
We got our clubs and went over to the clubhouse to see what was going on and that's when I saw it was the RE/MAX Long Drive contest. It was the regional qualifications and it was open to anyone. It was about 4:15 and the contest was ending at 5pm so I went to the range to hit my driver because I decided I was going to do this.
I hit for about 20 minutes and went back up to the clubhouse and signed up for the contest. It cost $30 for 6 balls and you could do it as many times as you wanted. I got the 6 balls and waited my turn. I had to wait about 10 minutes and while I was waiting I saw some of the guys hitting their drives about 320 to 340 and then they called my name "Don Smith from Fountain Valley, CA".
I walked up there with my Taylormade Burner 2 in board shorts, a t-shirt, and flip-flops. It was a small crowd of about 30 people and I'm pretty sure they thought they were going to see me hack my drives out there. I couldn't believe how nervous I was. I've played in many tournaments before in high school and at the club level and I've always been able to calm myself down and do well on the first tee, but this time I couldn't. I had a hard time getting the tee in the ground and keeping the ball on the tee.
I finally took a few deep breaths and settled in behind the ball. I was so amped up and I was trying so hard to bring myself down, but I just couldn't do it. My first drive was a 200-yard duck-hook, which I followed up with 3 more duck-hooks in the 220-yard range. I was swinging so quick because of the adrenaline that it was uncontrollable.
I stepped away and took a few more deep breaths and on my 5th drive I hit it semi-solid about 260-yards. It wasn't my best and I knew I could do better, but I just needed to settle down because I was down to my 6th and final ball. I took a few more deep breaths and told myself to take it away slow and I did just that. The ball came off the face with the crack of a well hit drive and it had a soft draw to it. I heard the small crowd approve of the drive and when the ball stopped rolling it measured 304 yards and they applauded.
I walked away happy with my performance and hoping I gave them a story they could tell about a guy in board shorts and flip-flips entering the long drive contest.
Have you every tried the long drive contest? Have you been in a golf situation where you were this nervous?

Calloway's OptiFit Driver System Is Hi-Tech
I recently read about Calloway's new customer driver fitting system called the Calloway OptiFit Driver System and I was thoroughly impressed. One of the problems with existing club fitting systems and analysis is that you rarely get to hit the actual club head and shaft combination that you get fitted with, but that's not true with Calloway's OptiFit Driver System.
In the traditional club fitting scenario you hit some balls with a club that's about the one you would play with and from there the pro analyzes you swing through sophisticated swing monitoring software. From all the numbers they get through the monitor from your swing they determine the appropriate club for your swing. With Calloway's OptiFit Driver System the pro is able to create hundreds of club head and shaft combinations on the spot for you to hit with. Here are few things about Calloway fitting system:
The OptiFit Driver System equips retailers and pros with a compact, hi-tech fitting tool that can quickly identify the precise club head-shaft combination for each golfer's individual swing. A significant leap forward in custom driver fitting, the OptiFit Driver System will dramatically improve the process whereby consumers select a new driver.
Each OptiFit Driver System comes with 13 Big Bertha Fusion FT-3(TM) Driver heads and 23 separate shafts from the most-respected and most sought-after shaft manufacturers in the marketplace, including Aldila, Fujikura, Graphite Design(TM), Grafalloy, UST and Mitsubishi Rayon. Driver heads for the new X460 Driver will be added to all OptiFit Driver Systems as they become available, increasing the number of head-shaft combinations to more than 700.
The heads and shafts can be mixed and matched, with each shaft quickly and easily inserted into the clubhead and locked into place with a proprietary torque wrench customized for Callaway Golf, which is what the OptiFit Driver System is. The head and shaft are fitted together with a precision screw designed to securely attach the head to the shaft. The resulting 299 different head and shaft combinations that the OptiFit Driver System can create for a club-fitting professional helps them zero-in on and match the needs of virtually any golfer.
The production-quality of the drivers assembled by the OptiFit Driver System distinguishes it from other attempts at interchangeable shaft systems. At the PGA Merchandise Show in Orlando last month, industry representatives and PGA Professionals who saw it for the first time were amazed at its efficiency, precision and reliability.
Among the other unique aspects of the OptiFit Driver System is the proprietary keyed assembly mechanism that renders foolproof the switching of clubheads and shafts. Aligning the shaft is quick and easy and an ergonomic torque wrench designed for Callaway Golf ensures "no-doubt" assembly by signaling with a loud "click" that the shaft is properly locked into place. The Calloway OptiFit Driver System is expected to be available at select green grass and off-course retailers in April.
