Top 10 Hottest Golf Clubs Sept 2009

Here are the Top 10 Hottest Golf Clubs for the month of Sept 2009. These were the hottest golf clubs in demand during the month of September. Do you know which one is the hottest?

1. Callaway Golf X-20 Iron Set
2. Ping Eye 2 Iron set
3. Ping G10 Driver
4. TaylorMade Burner 460 Driver
5. TaylorMade R9 Driver
6. TaylorMade Tour Burner Driver
7. TaylorMade r7 Iron set
8. Ping G10 Iron set
9. Ping G5 Iron set
10. TaylorMade r7 460 Driver

There weren't many changes in the Top 10 hottest golf clubs since August. The same top 10 golf clubs are in this months report as they were in last months. The Callaway Golf X-20 Iron Set is still in the number spot over the Ping Eye 2 iron set, which was in the #1 spot for 2 years.

Only a couple golf clubs moved positions and it was only up or down a spot... So nothing too exciting to report this month. Hopefully we'll see some new clubs in the Top 10 next month. TaylorMade still has 5 of the top 10 golf clubs, which is pretty amazing.

Just in case you missed it, here's my post of The Hottest Golf Clubs Aug 2009, which is how the top 10 clubs finished for the month of August 2009.

What's In Scott Verplank's Golf Bag?

Scott Verplank won his 5th PGA Tour tournament last weekend at the 2007 EDS Byron Nelson Championship at the TPC at Four Seasons, TPC at Four Seasons-Las Colinas Irving, Texas. Do you want to know what he was carrying in his golf bag during his win?

Driver: TaylorMade r7 425 9.5°
3 Wood: Taylormade 200 Tour
5 Wood: Taylormade 200 Tour
Irons:  (3-PW) TaylorMade rac Forged
SW:     Titleist Vokey Design 55°
LW:     Titleist Vokey Design 59°
Putter: PING Anser
Ball:   Titleist New Pro V1

This was an emotional victory for Verplank because he grew up in Texas and had played several rounds with Byron Nelson when he was a kid. It was a tournament that he's been wanting to win for a long time. He would have loved to win it when Byron was still alive, but he felt he had his help from above from Byron.

It took everything Scott had to pull out his one shot victory over Luke Donald. Verplank birdied three straight holes and made an improbable par on 17 to secure the one shot victory over Donald. Scott finished with a 4-under 70 for a 13-under 267 total.

Eventhough Byron wasn't there to congratulate Scott for his victory, Byron's wife Peggy was there to do the honors. Scott took home $1,134,000 for the win and a custom-made motorcycle built by Orange County Choppers.

What's In Mark Calcavecchia's Golf Bag?

Mark Calcavecchia won the 2007 PODS Championship at Innisbrook Resort (Copperhead Course) Tampa Bay, Florida, which was his 13th tournament win on the PGA Tour. Do you want to know what he was carrying in his golf bag during his win?

Driver: PING Rapture 7.5°
3 Wood: Callaway Golf Steelhead III Strong
Irons:  (2-PW) PING i5
SW:     PING EYE2
LW:     PING EYE2
Putter: PING Redwood Anser
Ball:   Titleist Pro V1

This was Mark's only win since winning the 2005 Canadian Open. He and Heath Slocum started Sunday tied at -9 and playing together in the last group. They battled the entire round and it came down to the 18th hole.

Mark missed his 5-foot par putt to win the tournament and left the door open for Slocum to tie by making his 4-foot par putt. Calcavecchia thought for sure it was going to sudden-death, but Heath lipped out and the tournament was over.

Mark finished with a 1-under 70 and -10 for the tournament with 2 other players (John Senden, Heath Slocum) tied at -9. His paycheck for winning the 2007 PODS Championship was $954,000.

Does TaylorMade And Golf Balls Mix?

I've been hearing a lot about TaylorMade entering the premium golf ball market under their Tour Preferred brand. When I think of TaylorMade I think of drivers not golf balls, but who knows they just might pull it off.

The TaylorMade TP Red and TP Black are the new balls and they're both being played on all the major tours. I've heard that both Sergio Garcia and Hale Irwin are currently playing these balls. I've also heard mixed reviews with a lot of comparisons to Titleist's Pro V1, but I think everyone compares a new ball to the Pro V1.

I read one review where a guy preferred the TaylorMade TP over the Pro V1 for both distance and feel.

TaylorMade is putting a lot behind these balls and they've made some pretty strong claims like:

“Our goal was to build two tour-quality, urethane-covered balls that generate faster ball speed for more distance than any other ball in the category, while also offering low spin off the driver and high spin off the irons,” said Benoit Vincent, chief technical officer for TaylorMade. “From that came the creation of TP Red and TP Black, which we believe delivers a better performance package than any other golf ball of its kind.”

These are three-piece balls that employ an NdV4 core, multi-blend ionomer mantle and ultra-thin thermoset urethane cover. TaylorMade promises both balls offer accelerated speed, with high launch and low spin off the driver plus high spin around greens.

The main difference is that the TP Red is geared to produce a low launch off irons, while the TP Black is geared to produce a high launch off fairway woods, hybrids and irons. Players seeking more distance in the irons or iron replacements would probably first take a look at the TP Black; golfers seeking more control in their irons would probably first consider the TP Red.

They both go for an MSRP of $55 per dozen and are supposed to be available May 19. Currently GolfSmith is taking orders for these at $42.99 for a May 24th ship date.

If you've played with these balls I'd like to hear your comments.
